The Followthetracks Digital Guide is preinstalled on a tablet in your vehicle, which will be handed over to you upon arrival. The journey with the off-road vehicle and rooftop tent through Oman is a highlight in itself. The country surprised me with all its different facets; I particularly enjoyed camping in the desert and the canyoning. I would recommend the trip as it is and would gladly do it again a second time.

Oman as a country completely surprised me on this tour: exploring the numerous wadis, mountains, and beaches with a car and rooftop tent was incredible. Max’s tablets with the route and tips (for cool cafes and hidden highlights) were brilliant. All adventurers will love the beautiful camping spots in nature, with the highlight being Wahiba Sands and a night under the desert stars. Arrival in Muscat

You will get picked up at the airport and receive an introduction to your rental 4×4 including all camping gears and rooftop tent. Experience Muscat City as well as Mutrah Fort and collect your personal groceries for the road trip at a local market. Stay at your already pre-booked designated hotel.

Drive to Snake Canyon in Hajar Mountains. Meet your local canyoning guides and explore Snake canyon together by walking, climbing and swimming. Choose your favourite camp spot from our suggested camp list in the area of Bald Sayt.

ancient gardens & jabal shams
Discover the ancient village Misfath Al Abriyyin with its beautiful gardens. Afterwards, drive to Jabal Shams, Oman’s highest mountain and do the famous Balcony Walk. Choose between sunrise or sunset camp spots and get cozy on the mountain top

Wadi Nakhr & nizwa
Travel via Wadi Nakhr to Nizwa, an ancient fort town on the foot of the mountains. Experience the city and the fort as well as small coffee shops. Stay at a local heritage hotel and feel the vibe of this magical place. Visit the Goat Market in the morning (date dependent).

Wander around Birkat Al Mouz, a 5000 years old settlement within thousands of palm trees. Explore the endless dunes of Wahiba Sands and get to know the Bedouin culture. You can ride camels or even witness a camel race close by. Watch the milky way and camp inside the dunes.

Enjoy the most magical sunrise in the desert and go visit Wadi Bani Khalid, a true mountain oasis, in the early morning before everyone else. Drive to harbour town Sur and visit Dhow factory. Overnight at Nomad Inn, our partner’s hotel and camp ground in Wadi Tiwi.

wadi tiwi & wadi dayqam dom
In the morning you will discover Wadi Tiwi and Wadi Mibam, abseil down a waterfall and swim in Oman’s most beautiful and least touristic Wadi. Head back to Muscat via Bimmah Sinkhole and Wadi Dayqah Dam and overlook a majestic sea surrounded by rough yet beautiful mountains.

dimaniyat islands
A true highlight towards the end of your trip is a snorkel excursion to Dimaniyat Island Nature Reserve. Swim with turtles, enjoy the pristine white sand beaches and snorkel in crystal clear water. You will have lunch on your boat and will be brought back to Muscat around 2pm. Afterwards you can either stay for an additional night at own expense or depart from Muscat.

Is Oman safe to travel?
Yes. Oman is considered one of the safest travel destinations in the Arab region and the world. Crime rates are extremely low, the domestic situation is stable, and the local people are not only incredibly hospitable but also accustomed to travelers and tourists due to centuries-old trade. You will notice that even after dark, women are often seen traveling alone – there is a general atmosphere of mutual respect. Incidents like thefts, car break-ins, or robberies, while present as anywhere in the world, are very rare – significantly less frequent than in Germany. The Royal Omani Police is present everywhere, there is hardly a spot in the country without mobile phone reception, and the police speak English in case you ever need assistance.
Do I have a guide while traveling through Oman?
No. But yes! Followthetracks tours are self-drive adventures designed in a way that you can explore with your friends & family privately with great flexibility while not missing out on local experiences and hidden gems. Instead of a physical guide, you’ll find a tablet with our app in your 4×4 car. The app guides you through Oman safely along the route you previously chose, shows & explains to you all the beautiful places, gives you camping spots & restaurant suggestions and provides photo inspiration. Our local team will be available 24/7 and will assist you in case you will need support. They will also take care of the logistics around your trip, such as booking the hotels, providing you with camping gear and the 4×4 as well as connecting you to local guides according to your itinerary.

The unique experience of our self-drive adventures comes to life through well-equipped 4×4 offroad vehicles, driven by you or/and your friends. These vehicles are made for the Omani highway as well as dirt and sand roads during your trip. To not get lost, you will find a tablet with our FTT app in each vehicle. It helps you to navigate your whole journey, provides you with recommendations and useful explanations and makes sure that you reach the next milestone on your route on time.
Where will I sleep during the round trip?
In your rooftop tent and hotels along the way. Offroad adventure means offroad adventure – so be prepared to experience the beauty of Oman’s nature and landscape during day and night time while camping in your rooftop tent. However, on your first day you will stay in a hotel in Muscat and in another hotel in Nizwa around the halftime point throughout your trip. A third place called Nomad Inn will be your last stop before you return to Muscat, providing you modern facilities and a pool while you camp on the property. You can, if available, upgrade to a room at own expense.
Will I get to meet Max on my tour in Oman?
Maybe. As it is a self-drive tour, you will travel with your friends and family and will be guided by a digital guide which Max has helped to develop and co-design. However, as we start our adventures in 2024, you might meet Max while you’re there! But he will not accompany you during your tour.
Do I need off-road driving experience?
No. Followthetracks is a wonderful beginner experience as well as made for advanced offroad and self-drive travelers. Bring your curiosity in adventures, traveling and nature and we will do the rest – apart from the driving of course. But don’t worry, Oman’s infrastructure is great, the highway is in mint condition and the dirt roads and sand roads are definitely easily doable. In case you’ll get stuck, you’ll find the approriate gear in the car and instruction tutorials on the tablet.

The car features an automatic transmission and is equipped to go fully off-road.
